FAQs

Will the facility generate any noise or sounds?2022-02-15T02:08:12-07:00

Battery storage facilities such as this are quiet when operating. There are little to no moving parts, and the equipment is housed in a container that muffles sound.

Are there any radiation or fire-related safety risks associated with the technology?2020-10-19T23:33:08-07:00

Battery storage devices do not generate radiation and involve little to no fire risk when properly designed, installed, tested and operated. The battery storage systems contain protection and control features, including a battery management system that shuts down when operational environments are anything less than optimal. There are multiple redundancies built in and the project team works closely with the local fire marshal and permitting authorities to ensure all safety precautions are taken.

Based on the expected megawatts for this battery storage project, how many homes or businesses could be powered and for how long?2021-04-08T21:09:19-07:00

At full project build-out up to 200,000 homes could be powered for four hours.

Will the transmission line that runs to the Silvergate Substation be undergrounded?2022-02-15T02:06:14-07:00

Yes, while it is significantly more expensive, the project team has decided to underground the transmission line.

Could the battery storage project be undergrounded, or could the containers be stacked to allow for additional use of the site?2020-10-05T22:08:58-07:00

No, undergrounding or stacking the battery storage containers is not financially viable. Battery storage projects have never been undergrounded before, and technology for stacking battery storage containers is still very new.

Are there currently any projects similar to this one in San Diego?2020-10-05T22:19:27-07:00

Yes, a battery storage project has been operating in Escondido since 2017, and a battery storage project in Otay Mesa began operating in 2020.

Will construction jobs go to members of the local community?2022-02-15T02:04:45-07:00

Yes, the project team is committed to hiring locally and using union jobs as applicable.

What is the expected timeline to start construction and become operational?2022-12-28T13:48:22-07:00

Construction is expected to begin in 2023 and last for approximately eight to 10 months to meet a 2024 operations date, subject to all applicable approvals.

Is any consideration being given to the facility’s design or how it aesthetically fits in the community?2020-10-19T23:33:48-07:00

The project team will work with the community to ensure the facility fits in as seamlessly as possible. Potential ideas include trees and a community mural.

Will there be on-site security?2022-02-15T02:02:01-07:00

Periodic on-site security checks will be conducted in addition to the remotely controlled security operations.
